NYIGF PARTNERS WITH GIFT FOR LIFE TO LAUNCH NEW DESIGN COMPETITION

"Make Change" Competition Will Benefit DIFFA

January 28, 2010—Gift for Life, the gift, stationery and home decor industries' leading charitable organization, announced today a partnership with the New York International Gift Fair® (NYIGF®) to invite emerging and established designers to submit themed product design concepts as they vie for a People’s Choice Award and a Designer Distinction Award. Revenue generated through the competition, which debuts at the summer 2010 market, will benefit DIFFA: Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS.

The Gift For Life Product Design Competition, a new annual competition initiated by the New York International Gift Fair® (NYIGF®), will invite emerging and established designers to submit themed product design concepts as they vie for a People’s Choice Award and a Designer Distinction Award. Revenue generated through the competition, which debuts at the summer 2010 market, will benefit DIFFA: Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS.

The theme of the inaugural competition is “Make Change,” which requires designers to submit a piggy bank design which reinvents the iconic classic – or more contemporary digital coin collectors and counters – with unique and innovative elements. While banks can be dramatically re-imagined, they must retain their functional aspect and be a repository for money.

“Exceptional product design reaches all corners of the market, turning ordinary items into works of art available to everyone,” said Dorothy Belshaw, NYIGF Director and GLM Senior Vice President. “The ‘Make Change’ competition will be an opportunity to identify and recognize the talents that inspire, while benefitting an industry cause.”

The top 20 juried finalists’ banks will be on display at the summer 2010 NYIGF, and some 40,000+ market participants – including designers, manufacturers, sales agencies, retailers and press – will be invited to vote for their favorite design. The design receiving the highest number of votes will win the People’s Choice Award. In addition to the People’s Choice Award, a panel of celebrity designer judges will review all submissions and bestow one exclusive Designer Distinction Award to their collective favorite.

Winners of both the People’s Choice Award and the Designer Distinction Award will receive complimentary exhibition space (valued at $3,700) for the winter 2011 NYIGF.

A tax-deductible application fee of $50, for the first entry, and $40 for additional entries, is required to enter the competition, along with a creative prototype, which will be returned upon request. Applications may be submitted online, through June 15, at http://www.nyigf.com/GiftforLife.aspx.
